How I’m Reading
How am I reading now? I used to read only physical books. Of course back then I read only romance and select nonfiction topics, then I added in some young adult series. Then I added a Kindle and started doing a mix of physical and digital books. I don’t remember exactly why I originally added audio books into the mix, but now I love them.
My reading now is a mix of all three, but I lean a bit heavier towards the audio books, both because I can multitask while listening to them, and because my vision is not what it used to be. So listening to books saves my eyes, but still allows me to become immersed in the story, which is my favorite part of reading.
Because my eyes fatigue much faster than they used to, especially in low light, reading physical books is harder for me. Sometimes the shadows (or glare) on the page can cause the words to blur, this means it takes me much longer to get through a physical book than it should.
My Kindle falls somewhere in between. By the nature of the device, the screen is generally brighter (or I can make it so), which makes it a little easier to read. I can also increase the size of the print, which I can’t readily do with a physical book. The disadvantage here is that the battery life only lasts so long, and my Kindle charger has a very short cord. (Yes, I know I can buy a longer one).
So right now, I am still doing a mix of formats, but the majority of my reading is either digital or audio most days. Of course, I’m always going to favor owning a physical copy of the books that I love (and my bookshelves are currently overflowing). And someday soon I’ll get my new prescription, so hopefully I can last longer with physical books again.
I like reading on my iPad because I can enlarge the text when my eyes get tired 🙂
