Friday Memes~ 3/1/24
I talked about doing more memes again, and here we go! There are several Friday memes floating around the book blogosphere and I have decided to join back in with most of them.
First up is Book Beginnings on Fridays, hosted by Gilion @ Rose City Reader
How it works: Share the first sentence (or so) of the book you are reading, along with your initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires. Please remember to include the title of the book and the author’s name.

The Friday 56 was started by Freda @ Freda’s Voice. Freda is currently taking a break from hosting, so in the interim it is being hosted by Anne @ My Head is Full of Books.
How it works:
When Ryan Kwok woke up on Tuesday morning, he discovered his abs had become a social media sensation.
His second attempt at cracking an egg was better, and he finally managed to get two eggs in the bowl, as required.
The first iteration of the Book Blogger Hop, which was started in March 2010 by Jennifer @ Crazy-For-Books, ended on December 31, 2012. On February 15, 2013, Billy reintroduced the hop with Jennifer’s approval. The hop will begin on a Friday of each week and end on a Thursday of the following week. Every week, there will be a prompt with a book-related query. The aim of the blog hop is to provide bloggers with an opportunity to follow other blogs, discover new books, make friends with other bloggers, and gain new followers for their own sites.
What was your gateway book—the book that made you want to read more—into reading or into a specific genre? (submitted by Meezan @ Caboodle of Cozie)
Answer:
I can’t remember my gateway book in general or specifically into romance, I started reading as a child and started romance in my teens, so that’s a really long time ago. I do remember my gateway book into YA, which is a book series I no longer discuss or feature. But my gateway into Sci Fi was The Martian by Andy Weir.
What parent would let their child leave home without knowing how to crack eggs? Very funny.
My Dad was into SciFi, so I read it as a teenager, starting with the robot stories by Isaac Asimov. I haven’t read it as much as an adult, but I just started Andy Weir’s new book, Project Hail Mary, and I’m really enjoying it.
I’m reading Project Hail Mary right now as well. I loved The Martian and Artemis.
You’ve peaked my curiosity on what your gateway series was. My gateway into sci-fi was Ender’s Game…Lol i hated it but it made me want to find one I didn’t hate.
I made it through Ender’s Game but couldn’t get beyond it in the series. As far as my YA gateway series, let’s just say it’s an immensely popular book and film franchise with lots of merch and theme parks but an incredibly problematic author who uses her money for evil.
Sounds like you read and have read a wide variety of genres. I could benefit from branching out more. 🙂
Nice answer…..I can’t remember what my gateway was.
Enjoy the rest of your weekend.
I couldn’t name a specific romance book that got me into romance either. Harlequin and Silhouette are the best I can do. I understand why you don’t want to mention your YA gateway author. I know exactly who you are talking about and why. It brings to mind one of my favorite fantasy books when I was a young adult. I don’t talk about it much anymore. Even though the author is dead, her books will always be tainted for me now because of her and her husband’s behavior and crimes against children.
