Readathon

Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon~ October 2024

Happy Readathon Day! While I wasn’t able to participate in this summer’s reverse readathon, I am back for the October event. I’ve shared frequently how much I love Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon, and even though I truly miss the readathon hype and energy from a few years ago, I still enjoy participating every April, July/August and October.

I will be updating my progress here throughout the next 24 hours, as well as updating on social media and chatting on the event’s Discord. I am going to try to participate on Goodreads as well this time. I am on the west coast of the US, so I’ll be participating between 5am today (Sat 10/26) and 5am tomorrow (Sun 10/27).

As far as TBR goes, I’m just continuing with my current reads and I’ll feature what I’m reading for each hour below.

Snacks are limited this time around due to financial restrictions, but here’s what I’ll be enjoying throughout the day:

Macaroni Salad
Lay’s Limon Chips
Snickers Bar
Microwave Popcorn
Applesauce
Yogurt
Cake Slice
Veggies w/ Dressing
Pizza
Mini Donuts

So here we go!

Hour 1:

Snack: Hostess Old Fashioned Donettes
Drink: Water
Book: You Should be So Lucky by Cat Sebastian

I am focusing on all audiobooks this time around. My eye strain has been getting really bad lately, so even too much computer time is bad. But I did spend most of this hour catching up on everyone’s opening surveys in the Facebook Group, Goodreads Group and Discord.

Hour 2:

Snack: None
Drink: Orgain Chocolate Fudge protein shake

Books: You Should be So Lucky by Cat Sebastian , Director’s Cut by Carlyn Greenwald

Finished my first book of the event, waiting for the sun to come up so I can change out the burnt out bulb in my ceiling light. I am a reverse vampire and need all the light (sensory issues), so this muted light is making me uncomfortable. And it’s a good thing I’m doing audio books, because I wouldn’t be able to read from a physical book in this light.

Hour 3:

Snack: Yoplait Raspberry Yogurt
Drink: Water

Read: Director’s Cut by Carlyn Greenwald

I feel like the first two hours were focused on getting everything together and going through opening surveys while listening to my reads. This hour was more chill and I got to focus more on the book, rather than just having it in the background while working on other things.

Hour 4:

Snack: none
Drink: Water

Read: Director’s Cut by Carlyn Greenwald , Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

Second book finished this hour. I am getting a bit sleepy already (the early start time is a little rough), so I might need to nap at some point soon, but I am hoping to push through. My reading is right on track for my timings so far, which is awesome. And both of my first 2 books were 5 stars.

Hour 5:

Snack: Applesauce
Drink: Water

Read: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

The sun is up and there doesn’t seem to be any fog today, so it’s finally bright enough to change the lightbulb in my room. It will now be bright enough for me again.

Hour 6:

Snack: None
Drink: Water

Read: Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella

We’re a quarter of the way through the readathon! 3 books down and I’ve stayed awake!

Hour 7:

Lunch: Macaroni Salad
Drink: Dr Pepper

Read: The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper

I was super hungry, so enjoyed my macaroni salad this hour and my first caffeine of the event. I might readjust my snack schedule for the rest of the day since I was so hungry before lunch. In years past, I’ve always scheduled too many snacks, so I may have cut back too far this time.

Hour 8:

Snack: Lay’s Limon Chips
Drink: Dr Pepper

Read: The Gravity of Us by Phil Stamper

I’m having such a great reading day! Sure, I was already reading all of these books, but 3/4 books so far are 5 star reads. And I seem to have gotten a second wind, because I am not sleepy any more.

Hour 9:

Snack: None
Drink: Dr Pepper

Read: Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia

The tiredness has returned, so I’m thinking I may need to take a nap next hour. I hate losing the reading time, but won’t be able to focus if I’m too sleepy. I won’t get through as many books as I originally hoped, but that’s ok.

Hour 10:

Slept: 60 minutes

Hour 11:

Slept: 30 minutes
Snack: Snickers
Drink: Dr Pepper

Read: Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia

A mid-afternoon nap recharged my batteries after the early morning start and I should be good to go for a while longer now. I’m hoping I can get away with a few shorter naps rather than a long sleep tonight but we’ll see when I get there.

Hour 12:

Snack: None
Drink: Dr Pepper

Read: Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia

I finished off my bottle of Dr Pepper this hour and we’ve reached the half-way point.

Hour 13:

Snack: None
Drink: Water

Read: Paola Santiago and the River of Tears by Tehlor Kay Mejia , Exes & Foes by Amanda Woody

Five books finished! I feel like it should be the middle of the night, but it’s only 6pm here and the sun hasn’t even gone down yet (soon though). We’re supposed to be getting some rain, but it hasn’t arrived yet.

Hour 14:

Dinner: Pizza
Drink: Sunkist Orange soda

Read: Exes & Foes by Amanda Woody

I took a break for most of the hour to make and eat dinner, but did get a little reading done.

Hour 15:

Snack: None
Drink: Sunkist Orange Soda

Read: Exes & Foes by Amanda Woody

I’m starting to get sleepy again, so I’ll probably be taking another nap soon. It is getting close to my current bed time (my sleep is really random lately).

Hour 16:

Snack: None
Drink: Sunkist Orange Soda

Read: Exes & Foes by Amanda Woody

I’m fighting sleep because I’m trying to finish this book first. There’s still another hour left though, so I’m not sure if I’ll make it.

Hour 17:

Snack: None
Drink: Sunkist Orange Soda

Read: Exes & Foes by Amanda Woody

It’s time for me to sleep again. I’m hoping that I can keep it to a short nap, but I may end up sleeping the rest of the night. If I end up sleeping for longer, I’m still happy with how I’ve done reading-wise (6 books read). But hopefully I’ll be back in a few hours for more.

Hours 18-23:

Slept6 hours

Hour 24:

Slept: 30 minutes
Snack: None
Drink: Water

Read: We Contain Multitudes by Sarah Henstra

Well, my body decided that sleeping was much more important than reading, so I missed the last 6 hours and just made it back for the end of the event. But I’ve learned to listen to my body.

Final thoughts:

Books completed: 5
Hours Read: 16
Hours Slept: 8

Another successful readathon… now to prepare for April.
