Can a girl who risks her life for books and an Ilori who loves pop music work together to save humanity? When a rebel librarian meets an Ilori commander… Two years ago, a misunderstanding between the leaders of Earth and the invading Ilori resulted in the death of one-third of the world’s population. Today, seventeen-year-old Ellie Baker survives in an Ilori-controlled center in New York City. All art, books and creative expression are illegal, but…

I really, really hope the author writes a sequel to this one, because I need more!

In the wake of oppression, Ellie practices resistance in the best way, by seeking happiness through her books and sharing them with others. If you look deeper, almost all of the residents of Ellie’s center were resisting with contraband of some form or another.

Morris is also resisting, from within the Ilori, with music and more.

Together, Ellie and Morris develop a bond and fall in love. I wasn’t as convinced that they were in love, but they were definitely close.

There are a mix of great side characters and truly terrible ones, Ilori and human alike. It goes to show that societies and people are more alike than not, I think.

I was surprised by one of the big twists at the end, but not by the other- I had predicted it. But I was very surprised by the end itself and have so many questions, which is why I need a sequel!
