Charity Spotlight~ The Innocence Project

One of the things that I am passionate about is giving back to the community, whether that be local, national, or international. While by no means the only way to give, one of ways to give back is through charitable organizations. Each month I will be featuring a different organization, starting with those I personally support, and moving on to those recommended by readers.

This month I’m featuring The Innocence Project. This is an organization that works to overturn wrongful convictions and free innocent people that have been convicted of crimes they did not commit. Here’s a statement from their site about their mission.

The Innocence Project’s mission is to free the staggering number of innocent people who remain incarcerated, and to bring reform to the system responsible for their unjust imprisonment.

They have teams that work in different arenas to fulfill this mission, from legal teams working to exonerate those wrongfully convicted and to change case law to improve the system, to teams working to reform and pass new laws, to social workers to help those who have been freed reclaim their lives, to researchers studying the impact of their work.

I don’t have a personal connection with this organization, or a story as to why I support them. I just believe that people should not be convicted of crimes they did not commit. And I believe that our justice system needs to continue to evolve to ensure that all people receive a fair trial, regardless of their race, ethnicity, religion, education, or socio-economic standing.

There are a variety of ways that you can get involved, from donating to signing petitions, to volunteering with a local organization (there are local organizations in most states in the US as well as parts of Europe and South America). They also have an online store which directly supports the organization.

To get involved, please visit their website or click here to donate.
