Do I Have Hobbies?
People often ask “what are your hobbies?” and I usually answer reading. There is really never anything beyond that. I mean I collect enamel pins and bookmarks, but that doesn’t require a whole lot of effort on my part. I also love animals and used to spend a lot of time at the zoo when I still lived in San Diego. There is a small zoo-ish place here that I visit occasionally as well. But hobbies that actually require participation? I don’t know.
There are things that I enjoy to do occasionally, like painting. I’m not very good at it, I tend to add too much or go too abstract. I like to paint on canvas or on wood forms (like birdhouses or boxes). I also tried to make jewelry but was really bad at that. I’ve always wanted to decorate a doll house, but the kits are so expensive that I’ve never gone there. I also used to enjoy latch hook, but have never been able to master crocheting, knitting, or cross-stitch.
I’ve gone hiking a few times in the past (and live in an area where the hikes are gorgeous). But I am terrified of reptiles (especially snakes) and have some physical limitations that currently keep me from anything too strenuous right now. And I have never been good at sports. I used to play an instrument, but it’s been so long, I’m not even sure if I can still read music.
I do enjoy experimenting in the kitchen, but don’t do it often for a lot of reasons (mom, lack of space, expense, mice). I could consider that a hobby, I guess. And I want to find a cookbook that I like and cook every recipe in it. I used to bake a lot, as well, and make candy around the holidays.
Really, I’m looking for something to get myself out of the rut I am currently in.
