Exploring Cultures
I mentioned last week that I am looking for new holiday traditions. I do not belong to any religion, and therefore and very secular in my celebrations. My Christmas traditions are generally centered around gifting and service, focusing on Santa and snowmen.
But I want to explore the other celebrations that happen every December, and throughout the year as well. So I am starting to look at other cultural celebrations, both religious and secular, studying their meaning and traditions to see if they are something that matches with my personal values.
This year I am starting my research with Hanukkah. I have always been intrigued by the Festival of Lights and want to learn more. Admittedly, most of my experience with this holiday comes from movies, TV and novels, but I am ready to learn more.
In addition to Hanukkah, I also want to explore Boxing Day a bit more this year, and look at the traditions for this day in both the UK and Canada.
I obviously can’t explore all of the various December celebrations in such a short time and do them all justice, so I am focusing on just these two for this year’s celebrations. But will be continuing to explore other traditions and holidays throughout the year. I’m hoping by next year I’ll have a better understanding of Yule, Kwanzaa and more, ensuring that these celebrations are given the honor and respect they deserve.
