Readathon Party?
My most successful readathon happened a few years ago when I went away for a few days and did my readathon in a hotel room. I am repeating that again in October this year, but I feel like I want to do something for the readathon coming up on April 30th as well.
I’ve always had this fantasy of doing a readathon party where a group of friends and I rented a little place for the weekend to read together. We would arrive on Friday night and make a big dinner and put together some snacks for the next day. The readathon starts at 5am where I live, so we would wake up early to early to start reading, then someone would make breakfast. Would would read and snack and talk about our books throughout the day, taking turns to put together meals. Those of us who wanted to stay awake would keep reading into the night until the 5am end time on Sunday morning, the others would grab some sleep. Then we’d nap Sunday morning and go for a hike or something in the afternoon before heading home.
There’s only one big problem with that fantasy… I don’t know a lot of readers IRL, and those that I do know don’t participate in readathons. And I don’t know anyone well enough virtually to plan a reading weekend with. It’s a goal though, to find people to have a readathon party with.
In the meantime, I’m still trying to decide what to do about the upcoming readathon. If I stay home there will be a lot of interruptions, there always are. And I’m not sure I want to spend the money for a hotel room in town for a couple nights when I have bigger trips coming up. I thought about reading at my office part of the day, but it’s creepy there on the weekends when no one is around.
Do you participate in any readathons? Have you ever had a reading party?
