Return to the City of Sin, where the perilous final game is about to begin...The players? Twenty-two of the most powerful, most notorious people in New Reynes. With no choice but to play, Enne and Levi are desperate to forge new alliances and bargain for their safety. But any misstep could turn deadly when a far more dangerous opponent appears on the board — one plucked straight from the city’s most gruesome legends. While Levi…

I read the first two books in this series a while back, so there was a large span of time between book 2 and this finale. Thankfully, the time away was wiped away within the first chapter and I was swept right back into the world of shades and talents.

There was a lot of drama and tragedy at the end of King of Fools (book 2), with the deaths of some notable characters from the first two books (one of whom was quite beloved). The missing characters are discussed throughout, but their loss is still felt by everyone. There are also a couple of new characters introduced for this final chapter.

The story is told from multiple points of view, focusing on Enne, Levi, Lola, Sophie and Harvey. New alliances and friendships are formed, and former alliances are broken as the story progresses.

Harvey’s storyline was probably the most complicated for me. I found myself alternately rooting for him and not trusting him. His commitment to Harrison and feelings for Bryce made him a very unreliable character. But I feel like the ending to Harvey’s storyline was exactly what needed to happen.

Sophie’s story is heartbreaking, she is filled with so much grief, and not a little anger. She is doing her best to survive the game and to keep from losing anyone else that she cares about.

And then comes Lola. Lola’s story is the hardest for me. She feels betrayed and alone and lets her anger overcome her, leading her to make some choices and alliances that have devastating consequences for those around her.

After the ending of the previous book, Enne and Levi are at odds. Enne is filled with regret, but is also determined to keep herself alive and out of prison, no matter the cost. Levi is heartbroken and angry with Enne, not knowing if he can trust her at all. More than anything else, the friction between these two, kept the outcome of the final game so unknowable.

Secrets are revealed and more characters meet tragic endings; some deserved, others not. I was shocked by one death in particular. And while things shake out for the most part, I kind of liked that things were still a little messy in the end.
