Review~ The Reunion

This story follows 6 classmates at their 10 year reunion party and is told in alternating first person POV.
Bryony was chosen as “most likely to be famous.” Life has not turned out as she expected and Bryony is bitter. This makes her a pretty unlikeable character and I can’t say that this changes as the story progresses, though she does show some character growth. She has kept in touch with everyone only peripherally, making her life seem more glamourous and hiding her true career.
Hayden was chosen as “most likely to succeed.” His life has also taken a very different turn than expected, choosing to become a full-time dad, rather than the tech genius everyone expected. He’s perfectly content with his life, loves is daughters deeply, and co-parents well with his ex. Until everyone starts lamenting on how he was forced to settle. There are a few moments when Hayden gets angry, especially with Bryony, but he is fairly even-keeled, even when things start to go wrong. He really only kept in touch with Ashleigh, his best friend, after high school.
Ashleigh and Ryan were voted as “most likely to kill each other,” because they fought and challenged each other all through school. Ashleigh resents Ryan and always felt like he and his friends were trying to humiliate and degrade her all through school. She has kept track of everything Ryan has done since graduation and still carries that animosity for him.
Ryan, on the other hand, didn’t realize how badly Ashleigh felt after each of their encounters in high school. He attempted several times to make overtures to her that were misinterpreted. They are forced to confront each other, their beliefs, and what has been hiding behind the animosity all along. While Ashleigh had some less-likeable qualities, I did like her character evolution and how this storyline wraps up.
Then there are Steph and Shaun, voted “most likely to end up together.” The were high school sweethearts, totally in love and inseparable; at least until they went away to college. Now they are both engaged to other people. Seeing each other at the reunion brings up a lot of memories and nostalgia that Shaun is anxious for them to explore.
Steph and Shaun are both reminded of their relationship together and question where their lives would be if they had stayed together. They also question whether they are meant to be together or with their current partners. I’m not a fan of cheating storylines, and this one kind of skirted the edge, so I was a bit uncomfortable with it. But I think that things were resolved well. Steph is smart, secure, and comfortable in her own skin. Shaun, however, has just floated through life, and I think this is the first time he’s had to really look at his choices.
While I enjoyed the story, I’m not sure that I agree with it being presented as a romance. Yes, there is definitely a romance within the story, as well as romantic undertones in another story; but as the story follows 6 characters, and two of them are not involved in any romantic storyline, I think a better classification would be general fiction.
