Should I Join Tik Tok?
In July I stopped using Facebook and Twitter and deleted the apps. The only social media I have kept (but admittedly rarely use) is Instagram. While in so many ways this is a good thing, there are also some serious disadvantages to not having social media any longer– less visibility of the blog and lack of community being the biggest ones.
I have been debating some of the other social media platforms since before I left Twitter, but I have reservations and concerns about them, so I haven’t created accounts anywhere yet. That’s what this post is for- to weigh out the pros and cons of the other platforms and see what all of you think before moving forward with any of them.
Tik Tok
I don’t know much about this one, aside from it is hugely popular and video based (and that live streamers make money off of doing weird repetitive actions). I know that there is a large BookTok community, that’s about it. Oh, and I have been getting a ton of advertisements to join lately.
Mastadon
This one seems confusing based on what I’ve heard from other people. It’s also the host for the Truth Social platform and that makes me hesitant- will there be a lot of hate groups on the platform? But I also know that a lot of people moved from Twitter to Mastadon, so the community could be there.
Threads
This one seems the most likely choice, but it’s Meta and I’m not fond of their incessant advertisements and data mining. I also think it’s weird that it’s tied to your Instagram account.
Blue Sky
At this time, this platform requires an invitation to join. This is good to keep out hate groups, but not so good for people like me with smaller followings. I’m currently on the wait list to receive an invitation to the site, but it’s already been a month and nothing has happened, so who knows how long it will take.
Spoutible
Finally is Spoutible. This one seemed like it was the best bet originally, then there was an issue between romance authors and the founder that ended with some nastiness and left a bad taste in my mouth for the people behind the platform. I am probably least likely to join this one.
Are you on any of these platforms? What do you think about them?
I’m on Tiktok but I don’t post any of my own content, but I spend way too many hours watching everyone else’s videos. Right now the viral prank is to crack an egg on your kid’s forehead. Some kids take that brutal attack by Mom or Dad (mostly Mom) VERY PERSONALLY. lol
But yah, I love BookTok, I love the cooking videos, I love the dance videos, I love the kid videos, I love the cat videos, dog videos (huskies are hilarious!!!!) I love the videos of people cleaning their messy houses and doing their “Sunday resets”…I love it all!!!!
