I’ve gotten pretty lax about most social media over the last year. I haven’t used Facebook for this blog at all, since I’m not out to family and couldn’t be anonymous there, and haven’t posted much on Instagram in a while. Twitter has been my go to location for checking in with bookish people and promoting the blog, which is kind of funny considering once upon a time it was my least favorite social media platform until I finally curated my feed correctly.

With the current Twitter implosion thanks to a certain someone trying to “fix” something that wasn’t broken to make it “more profitable,” people have been leaving Twitter in droves. But there is no one place everyone seems to be headed, and quite frankly, I’m not really like the options. So where do I go after Twitter if the platform dissolves or decays past the point of toleration?

Mastadon seems to be the primary choice for many. But all I can figure out it that it is super complicated and no one knows what server they should be on. Another option people have been choosing is Hive, but there are a lot of questionable things about Hive that make me hesitant to jump on board there, not the least of which is their lack of a web presence. I think there have been a couple of other options listed as well, but I know even less about them.

For me, I don’t see a suitable replacement amongst all of these new platforms. At least not yet. I tend to be the person who is always late to the social media platform, waiting to join until long after a site is established and popular. For now, I’ll hang on with Twitter until it becomes too unbearable. Then I guess I’ll just revive my Instagram account and get that working for me.
