Why You Should Support Libraries

Libraries are essential to communities and they are so much more than books.  Of course, if you read this blog, you probably already know that. But just in case, I wanted to share some reasons why you should support libraries.

  1. Free access to books: while there may be a limit to how many books you can check out at a time, there is no limit to the number of books you can check out over time. And if your library doesn’t have a book you’re looking for, they will usually track it down at a neighboring library or purchase it for their collection.
  2. Free Wi-Fi access: Wi-fi is available in libraries for people who do not have access at home for whatever reason. This has come in handy for people in times of emergency when homes are damaged and destroyed, as well as for those who are unhoused or unable to afford an internet connection.
  3. Free access to computers: Not only are there computers that you can use, you can also check out laptops to use while in the library.
  4. Free access to DVDs: Not only do libraries have books, they also have movies and TV shows that you can check out on DVD.
  5. Warming or Cooling centers: During the freezing temperatures in the winter and the heat of the summer, libraries act as cooling or warming centers for those who don’t have heat or air conditioning (usually seniors or the unhoused).
  6. Free classes: Libraries offer computer classes, writing classes, and classes of all varieties.
  7. Free job prep: Not only do libraries have computers for job searching, many also offer resume help and interview prep.
  8. Free children’s services: Libraries offer story and craft times in addition to a variety of educational events.
  9. Access to museums, zoos and local attractions: Many libraries have passes for museums, zoos and other attractions that can be checked out as well.
  10. Community gathering space: Most libraries have meeting rooms for use by the community (sometimes with a small fee) that can be used for classes, meetings or events.
