Working Through My TBR
My TBR is ginormous… I easily have more books on my To Be Read list than I will complete in the remainder of my lifetime. But that’s ok. At least I’ll never run out of something to read, and I’ll be able to keep busy during retirement.
Here’s a breakdown of my current TBR (Warning, it may scare you!)
Physical books owned (unread)- 714
Digital books owned (unread)- 1240
eARCS (unread)- 155
Wishlist books (unowned)- 1633
Current total- 3,742
If I never added another book to my TBR (and we know that’s not going to happen), I could finish my TBR in 25-30 years. Considering I’ll be 52 in a couple of months, that’ll take me into my 80s. Of course, my reading volume may increase as I have more time to devote to it (as long as my mental health holds).
I started 2023 with a goal to read 75 books. Of course that goal was made while I was working full time and I am currently well ahead of schedule to hit that goal. As I finish up the last few projects I have around the house, I’ll be able to devote more time to reading. The only thing that may affect that is my mental health. When I get depressed I tend to spend a lot of time streaming shows (though will most likely only have my streaming services for another month, two at the most unless I find a job soon), and don’t read as much. And if I get anxious, I doom scroll on social media; also limiting my reading.
I’ve decided to put together a tracking spreadsheet of how many books are on my TBR to check my progress. Obviously I tend to put more books on the list than I read each month; but I should see some reductions in some of the categories at least. It doesn’t help that my reading tastes are wide an varied between both age categories and genres. If I find myself with lots of extra time, maybe I’ll break my TBR down even further by Fiction and Non-fiction; Genre and Topic; and Age Group (Childrens, MG, YA, NA & Adult). That could be a big project though, so maybe not.
That is a pretty major TBR for sure. I have a couple thousand on my ‘unowned’ list as well…I’m not afraid of adding something just so I don’t forget that it was recommended. I started my spreadsheet 15 years ago when I didn’t own or wish for nearly so many books. I have all the categories you mentioned plus some. I add categories every couple years as my interest in a particular category evolves. It does take time to keep up, but to me it’s a fun task so I never mind it. I’m sure you’ll settle on a reasonable amount of info vs input time balance. Good luck! (my spreadsheet is invaluable!) Have a terrific week
