A gender-swapped spin on Weird Science that takes place in Australia sounded like it could be a lot of fun. And it definitely did have its fun moments.
The story is told mostly by Katie, with assistance from her best friend, in a recorded retrospective. Most of the story takes place in the recent past, with a few current scenes as part of the recording session.
It starts off normally, Katie is a teenager who has never had a boyfriend or kiss. Her best friend has a boyfriend. Her best guy friend has dated, her arch enemy is dating Katie’s crush. So what’s a girl to do except make a clay version of the perfect guy infused with all of your perfect traits.
And then he comes to life.
There’s a lot of humor around Guy’s initial appearance and his slavish devotion to Katie, even though she’s a little freaked out. But soon she’s quite caught up in the whole thing, neglecting her best friend, forcing Theo to provide Guy a place to stay (and a back story), all while still flirting with her crush.
Eventually everything goes wrong and Katie is forced to figure out just what it is that she actually wants and what Guy and her friends deserve.
There’s some bullying that is never really handled in a good way, a lot of hurt feelings, and not enough growth in my opinion. But they are all teens, so there’s still time for them to grow and mature.
I did make a prediction at the beginning of the story as to who Katie would ultimately choose, and I was correct, so that was fun.
