Charity Spotlight~ St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital

One of the things that I am passionate about is giving back to the community, whether that be local, national, or international. While by no means the only way to give, one of ways to give back is through charitable organizations. Each month I will be featuring a different organization, starting with those I personally support, and moving on to those recommended by readers.

This month I have chosen to feature St. Jude’s. While there are other, similar hospitals for battling childhood diseases, I have a personal connection to St. Jude’s. As a child, one of my cousins (ok, my dad’s cousin’s son if you want to get technical), was diagnosed with cancer as a toddler, he was treated through St. Jude’s, though he unfortunately did not survive and passed away before his 5th birthday. I was 9 or 10 at the time and this was the second loss I had to deal with. As I became an adult, I got to know more about the organization and am impressed at the strides that they have made over the last 40 years since Javier passed away. Though I have not always been in a position to donate, I have been doing what I can to help the organization.

Not only are they top notch in cancer research and treatment, they house and feed the families of patients at no charge, and never bill the patients family for treatment. This is how all hospitals should function in my opinion, but is a rare and beautiful thing in our current healthcare system.

In addition to their monthly donation program, “Partners in Hope,” you can make one time donations, or purchase items through their shop, many of which feature artwork from patients.

Do you have a charity that you would like me to feature in a future post?
