What I Like to Read

I briefly mentioned in my launch post some of the types of books that I enjoy, but I thought I would give you a little bit more of an in depth look at they types of books I’ll be featuring here on the blog. I read books from most age categories and a little bit from most genre, but I do have areas where I tend to focus.

I used to read strictly adult romance, until about 10 or so years ago when I started branching into different age groups and then into different genres. As I’ve expanded more, I started making a conscious effort to include more diverse reads, which has become a much larger focus in the past year. I try to include authors and stories of various ethnicities and cultures, religions, sexualities, and disabilities. Mental health and LGBTQ+ stories are of course close to my heart, so they may feature more than others.

Middle Grade

I don’t read picture books and not a lot of children’s books (though I do like some), but I do enjoy some good Middle Grade reads… especially MG Fantasy. Rick Riordan is a favorite, and I’m starting to explore some of the series in the Rick Riordan Presents line.

Young Adult

About half of what I share is Young Adult, though that’s not necessarily representative of what I read. I tend to go for Contemporary, Dystopian, Fantasy, and Sci Fi when it comes to this age group. And while romance does not have to be the main plot, it helps if there’s a little thrown in somewhere. I adore authors like Jenn Bennett, Ashley Poston, Elizabeth Acevedo, Maggie Stiefvater, Sandhya Menon, Nic Stone, Becky Albertalli, Marie Lu, and the writing team of Jay Kristoff and Amie Kauffman (I like them separately, but together they are pure magic). Plus so many more! If I kept listing them, this post would go on forever.

Adult

Most of what I own are books that fall in this category, because I’ve always been a book buyer but only turned onto reading books for other age groups within the last 10 years. Here I’m going to go for Romance 9 times out of 10, though the occasional SciFi/Fantasy or Thriller slips in. As far as the romance goes, I tend to prefer Contemporary, Romantic Suspense, or Paranormal (think witches, not vampires), as well as Chick Lit and LGBTQ+. I used to read a lot of Historical Romance many years ago, but don’t as much any more. I adore authors like Nora Roberts (J.D. Robb), Jayne Ann Krentz (Amanda Quick), Annabeth Albert, Christina Lauren, Talia Hibbert, Sophie Kinsella, Colleen Hoover, and too many more to list.

I don’t read a lot of Mysteries and virtually no Horror. The first because I will always skim ahead and therefore always know the ending before I get there, and the latter because I just am not a fan. But I do try to keep my options open and am always willing to explore new genres when I hear about an amazing book.

Non-Fiction

Most of my non-fiction reading these days is Memoirs and Essay collections. I tend to focus on travel and foodie topics, though have also been reading a lot about social justice heroes as well. And humor essays are a lot of fun as well. I don’t tend to feature a lot of other non-fiction, but I also read books on writing, self-care, and Buddhism.

So tell me about yourself! What types of books do you read?
