The New Social Media
With the new year and the evolution of social media over the last year, it’s time to come up with a new social media strategy. Especially since I want to work on connections, and virtual connections are easier for me to build. In the middle of 2023, I left almost all social media, keeping only my anonymous Instagram. I have since added Threads, BlueSky and an anonymous Facebook account. All of these accounts are under Reinvented Reader, with no mention of my actual name on them. The only social account that has my name attached to it anymore is Goodreads. Weirdly though, I don’t mind if people link the accounts to me now.
Here is how my social media platforms are going, and how I hope to use them this year.
This is my most established account. The name on it has changed as my blog evolved, but that’s it. I’ve never really used it as a social platform before, though I do have 117 friends. I recently started posting my book progress more consistently and would like to start adding some of my impressions. In the past, I have not posted my reviews to GR, though I do submit a star rating for every book I finish. I am considering changing this and adding my reviews here as well.
I’ve always skipped past the home feed, but in the spirit of making connections, am starting to interact with it now. We’ll see how that develops over the coming year. One thing to note: I found Goodreads just before I turned 40 and while I have tried to update books from my past as I remember them, there are decades of missing books. My reading history is only accurate from 2011 on.
This is my second most established social media. I had a different account before that I no longer use (Fitkittymama), but I didn’t officially close it. I had considerably more followers on the older account, but it was important when I first launched Reinvented Reader that I be anonymous because I wasn’t out. That’s less important now.
I’ve been hit or miss with posting to Insta, but in December I was much more consistent, posting my daily advent calendar gifts and secret santa/holiday cards. I definitely want to be more a more active member of the Bookstagram community this year. I will never have the gorgeous curated pictures the influencers have, but still want to share my current reads, quotes & life. And while I like a lot of posts, I’m really bad at commenting, so I need to get better there as well.
And I need more book people to follow! I follow several, but honestly my Instagram feed consists mostly of GBBO bakers, RWRB, Taylor Swift and 911 Lonestar fan accounts, some celebrities, red pandas, and cats.
My threads account is relatively new, I’ve posted a few times, but really haven’t used it much. My feed here is mostly LGBTQIA+, RWRB fan accounts, and books. I’m hoping to grow this account and use it the way I used to use Twitter (an account I no longer have). I plan to share my current blog posts, what I’m reading, anecdotes about my day, stuff like that.
This account is fairly new. As of the writing of this post, I haven’t even filled out my profile information. Thus far, I have primarily used it to watch random videos in the “For You” feed. I only follow 3 people. And I honestly don’t know if I will ever post to this site, at least not showing myself on camera. I really don’t know.
But I am starting to see more content creators that interest me, so I might follow more. And I want to post at some point, I really do. I just hate how I look on camera, so it’s something I will really need to work up to.
Another new account. I had left Facebook and intended to remain off of the platform, but then rejoined for a specific group for a Christmas gift exchange. I decided that I will go ahead and continue using it as a place to feature my current posts, bookish thoughts, and whatever. I currently have no friends here though, so not sure who will be seeing my stuff for the time being.
This is my newest account. I was waitlisted for an invitation code for a while and finally got one at the beginning of December. As of this writing, I have not posted anything to this platform and am having difficulty finding people to follow. I do have a few bookish people so far, but not many. My feed is pretty bad at the moment because the “discover” option is filling my feed with some unpleasant posts.
The platform titles above all link to my profile if anyone is interested in following me. I’ll follow back if we share mutual interests. I’m looking for actual connections and not just numbers. And I block anyone who posts hateful or derogatory posts against any marginalized community, just so you’re aware. Feel free to drop your links in the comments as well.
