Breaking Through the Slump
Some days I think I have beat this reading slump that started in April 2020, and other days I think I’m never going to beat it and that this is just my new normal.
But really, it kind of is my new normal, at least at the moment, so maybe I should stop beating myself up over not reading more and just accept that I’m going to read 4-6 books a month right now and finish the year with 50 or so books read. There’s nothing wrong with that. I mean most people don’t read that many books in a year.
Of course, when you’ve gotten used to finishing twice to three times as many books a year, it’s hard to see the lower numbers. I like to challenge myself to improve different aspects of my life each year, but reading isn’t really about the numbers. It’s about enjoying the books that I choose to read, it’s about taking care of myself and not putting pressure on myself over something I love.
So I’m changing my outlook on this slump I’ve been in, and my whole approach to reading for the rest of this year. I’m not in a slump, I’m just reading slowly and being more selective about my reads. It doesn’t matter if I finish 1 book per week or 6 books per week or only a half-a-book per week, as long as I’m reading. And as long as I’m enjoying what I read.
There, I’ve broken the slump, it is no more.
