Readathon

Dewey’s 24 Hour Readathon~ April 2021 Recap

And yet another Dewey’s 24-hour Readathon is in the books. It’s always a little bittersweet when the readathon is over, but I already have the next two readathons on my calendar and I’m looking forward to it!

The Stats

Total Hours Read: 15 1/2

Total Pages Read: 438

Books Completed: 0 (but I completed the 2 I wanted to finish Sunday morning after the readathon ended)

The Highlights

Favorite Read: Remember Me? by Sophie Kinsella

Favorite Snack: I barely snacked this year, which is really weird. I guess my favorite was Beef Jerkey

Successes: I hit most of my goals for the event- I read for 15 hours, I was awake at the start and the end, I had fun and I cheered on other readers on social media.

The Takeaways

What Worked: I got a lot of reading done and avoided too much eye strain by switching to audio as needed. I let myself take cat naps as needed and had a realistic expectation of the amount of time I would be able to read.

What Didn’t: My snack choices really didn’t interest me and I didn’t snack. Also I included a nonfiction book that really slowed me down when it came up in the rotation

Things to Try Next Readathon: Keep it to fiction books and do a charcuterie board (so many people were posting pictures of theirs and they looked amazing!

Final Thoughts

Overall, I think this readathon went really well. I got a lot of reading done, and I feel like I may have (fingers-crossed) finally broken through the reading slump that I’ve had for essentially the past year. I got some snack inspiration for the next readathon, which I am really excited about. We have the dates for the Reverse Readathon over the summer (7/31), as well as next October’s readathon (10/23), so I am putting them on my calendar right now.

I do have some concerns regarding this year’s reverse readathon, as the hosts have decided to theme it around a very popular character from a VERY problematic author. While this character is still popular with readers around the world, I no longer support the author and therefore don’t promote her or her characters on my blog or social media. That being said, I do still plan to participate, but I may just have to do my readathon-ing on my own for that one, and not include the hashtags on my posts. I don’t know. I do have a few months to figure it out and see what feels right to me. **Edited to add: the hosts have just announced that they have decided to cancel the reverse readathon based on concerns over the theme. We are hoping that they will reconsider this and just remove the theme and still host the readathon without a theme as per normal. Regardless, I am still setting aside that day for my own readathon if the official one remains canceled, because the summer event is my favorite of the three.**
