Limiting Choices?
Many, many years ago, long before the invention of Goodreads or the start of my journey blogging about books, I had made a decision to only buy new books written by existing authors that I already read. I’m not sure how long I stuck to this policy, but it pre-dated ebooks or audio books during a time I wasn’t actively using the library.
Recently, I started considering whether or not I should re-enact this policy and limit my acquisition of books by new authors. I mean, realistically I have enough books to get me through the next 10-12 years, so should I really be acquiring more books by anyone, let alone new authors? Will I ever finish all of the books I currently own, let alone any new books I add? The honest answer is probably not. But that’s ok.
So I considered it, but really, what good is a love of books if I’m not finding new, amazing authors out there? I mean my favorites were all new-to-me at one point or another. If I had stuck with my idea of just reading books by authors I already loved, I would have never found Sandhya Menon, Becky Albertalli, Gayle Foreman, Eric Smith, Farah Rochon, Annabeth Albert, or even Christina Lauren.
Books are amazing, and it’s ok if I never finish everything I own. It means I’ll never run out of things to read. And I want to keep discovering new authors. This is what I love, and there may come a point where I can no longer afford to buy new books again (I mean right now my book buying is pretty much on hold), so until then I will be buying books by any author that sounds good to me. No limits. (Unless it’s a problematic author, but that’s another story).
