Review~ Get Real, Chloe Torres

Get Real, Chloe Torres
When Chloe Torres plans the perfect summer to reunite her estranged BFFs—a cross-country road trip to see their favorite boy band!—there’s only one difficulty… getting them to actually go along for the ride. Chloe Torres’ birthday has always marked the end of summer—but as she turns eighteen and prepares to leave for her freshman year of art school, it feels like the end of more than that. It’s the end of her adolescence, which means…

This is my first book by the author, and I really enjoyed it.

Told from Chloe’s POV, we follow 3 former best friends on a reunion road trip. At the start of the trip, they really don’t know each other very well at all, but get to know each other again on the trip, even with a series of misunderstandings.

Chloe is struggling with the upcoming changes in her life- going away to college and the upcoming birth of a new baby sister. She is incredibly nostalgic and wants things to remain the same. Coincidentally running into her two former best friends in the same day, coupled with the gift of 3 tickets to see their favorite band inspires her crazy idea of a road trip together to complete the bucket list they had made. She is excited and nervous when Sienna agrees to come, but is also hurt that Ramona never responds.

Sienna agrees to come on the trip for reasons of her own, not just a desire to rebuild old friendships. And Ramona shows up last minute, also with reasons of her own, and acts as if the trip is just a means to an ends, even though she secretly misses her friends as well.

Memories are shared, feelings are hurt, new bonds are formed, and old behaviors are explained as the three travel across the country towards the concert (with a few detours and road bumps along the way).

I liked the growth Chloe exhibited throughout the story as she came to understand Sienna’s and Ramona’s motivations for things that happened not only on the trip, but also in the past. The rebuilding of their friendships (and a blossoming romance) was encouraging and beautiful.

I liked the choices that Chloe ultimately makes for her life and enjoyed the ending.
