This story is told in alternating view points, and in different time lines. The time jumps are clearly communicated, so there’s no confusion. The past jumps are necessary to fill in some plot points and answer questions.

Mari and Javi met in college and were immediately drawn to each other. They decided that they were best friends and each vetted the potential relationships of the other, even though they were both attracted to the other, they didn’t act on it in favor of building their friendship.

Mari is determined and focused on the future she has planned for herself. She idolizes her father because he kept her with him when her mother moved back to Puerto Rico in her teens. She fights for the underdog and actively advocates for women and marginalized groups.

Javi is also determined, though is less confident that he will reach his goals and dreams. He feels betrayed by his brothers and is unsure of his self-worth. But he adores Mari and will do anything for her, putting her happiness first, even at the expense of his own.

Mari’s upcoming wedding brings a lot of feelings to the surface, but things are not always what they seem. And some people are not who they seem to be either.

I loved the relationship between Mari and Javi. They were both protecting themselves from getting hurt by keeping their feelings to themselves, but when it came right down to it, they always but each other’s happiness first. The ending was so hopeful and fun. I wouldn’t mind a spin-off featuring some of their friends or Javi’s brothers.
