Review~ Under All the Lights

This is the second book in a duology and I definitely recommend reading the first book (When it All Syncs Up) before reading this one. You’ll get all of the background information on Ollie and Aisha’s relationship, plus Neil’s situation which is referred to throughout this book.
I will admit that I came into this book with some trepidation after reading the first book, then reading the synopsis of this book. I was expecting to see that Ollie and Aisha had split up, but that is very much not the case.
All of the characters are flawed and battling deep internal battles. We really only see Ollie’s battles in depth since everything is told from his POV, but through him, we also see a lot of what Aisha and Jesse are going through as well.
I love Ollie as a character, throughout the first book he was so supportive of Aisha and Neil, and I was so happy to see him come into his own in this story. His anxiety is portrayed in a way that shares how brutal a panic attack can feel, and how debilitating it can be to your life. Ollie struggles through so much on his own, not wanting to burden anyone with how everything is affecting him. He puts so much pressure on himself about his sexuality, his family’s struggles, his dreams, and his issues with his dad.
Jesse has his own demons that he is dealing with as well. Like Ollie, he is slow to open up about them as well. Once they finally start opening up to each other, they are able to help one another with coping.
There are other issues that come into play throughout the story as well, miscommunications, pushy reporters, stalkers, and over-eager fans. But Ollie and Jesse are able to build a solid support network between their two groups of friends, their security, and their label.
I liked the open ending and would love to see more from Ollie and Jesse and Aisha (and Neil and Soph and everyone else). There was a lot of hope and anticipation for all of their futures.
