The title implies the trope of friends to lovers, but leaves out a lot more. Not only were Joni and Ren childhood friends, their families are friends, so close that they own a vacation home together that they visit every year. The family relationship brings in complications that would not have existed otherwise.

When the story starts, Ren and Joni haven’t spoken for over two years. It is implied that they had a major falling out, but it’s not clear what happened. The story is told from Joni’s point of view, so as things unravel, we only get her thoughts on what happened.

Joni isn’t happy, her career has taken a downward turn, and she doesn’t want her family to know. Now it’s her sister’s wedding at the vacation home, and everyone’s coming including Ren and his entire family. There’s a lot reminiscing happening, and the family keeps throwing her and Ren together.

There is a lot of tension between Joni and her mom, and as much as she tries to avoid Ren, to escape that tension, they keep ending up together for wedding errands and assorted other things. This opens up the lines of communication between them again.

The story is full of love and heartbreak, laughter, and even a few tears. Joni and Ren start to come together again, before everything comes to a head and all the secrets come spilling out. There is ultimately growth and understanding between the families. And this is a romance, so we do get our HEA.
