This is a coming of age story following 4 teen girls over the course of a defining summer, with hints into the complications of their mother’s lives as well. The story is told in alternating first person POV amongst the 4 main characters.

Scarlett has a bit of an attitude, which hides a lot of internal pain. She is twins with Skyler, conflicted about her relationship, has been pen pals with Amelia Grace for years, and seems to have taken an instant dislike to Ellie. She blames herself for a lot of the issues with her family, always seems angry, but goes out of her way to help her sister.

Skyler is the nice twin, or at least she gives everyone the benefit of the doubt. But she has her own issues, including juvenile arthritis, which has halted her softball dreams. She tries to hide her pain from everyone.

Amelia Grace is very committed to her church, but her church doesn’t want her, at least not the real her. She is accidentally outed publicly, and her step-father is enraged. She’s had a secret crush on Scarlett forever, and is afraid her mom can’t accept her as she is.

Ellie seems like she is shallow and popular because she tries so hard and has a big social media presence. But she is bullied and has no friends, is home-schooled and feels isolated. She just wants to belong.

Each of the girls has to confront what’s brought them to where they are now, each explores the possibility of love, and each learns more about themselves and each other along the way.

The moms are also dealing with issues, mainly Scarlett & Skyer’s mom, who is dealing with her husband’s infidelity. Also, Amelia Grace’s mom, who is dealing with an abusive husband. And then there are the “aunts” who are expecting their fist baby.

I liked the diversity included in the story, the twins are Jewish; Ellie is Muslim and half Indian. There are also 3 lesbian characters and one bisexual character.

There are some aspects of the story that I didn’t necessarily like, such as Scarlett’s toxic boyfriend who is only mildly addressed. And the instant love relationships that occurred. I also didn’t like that there was no resolution, or even an attempt at a plan for resolution with the twins’ parents.

But overall it was a nice story.
