I had fun with this read, though I could never imagine getting transported into my favorite comfort show. I absolutely adored Josh, he was perfect throughout. Brynn was another story.
Life is not going well for Brynn. She’s facing down her 30th birthday, divorced, with a roommate she barely sees or talks to. She feels like a failure in so many ways and spends her time rewatching her favorite comfort show from her teen years, where everything always worked out the way it should… until the final episode.
When a magic cake is delivered by the “super extra” from the show, she and her roommate Josh are transported into the show. Brynn is the main character, girl next door, while Josh is the bad boy who is always in trouble. Their mission, according to Sheldon, the “super extra” who brought them there, is to fix the ending. But was the ending really broken?
Brynn has to figure out what’s really important in her life, and who she really is. She throws herself into the character of Sloane, even when the choices Sloane makes are not the right choices for her. Through it all she learns things are not always what they seem. Your best friend may not have the best motives, and your enemy might really be a friend in disguise. And the guy who seemed right at 18, isn’t necessarily the right one at 30.
While I did say that Josh was perfect, he is not without his own issues. Josh feels like he failed his family and his father’s legacy. He doesn’t trust his instincts when it comes to running a bar. But he learns to trust himself again after being thrown into the show.
Josh and Brynn are drawn together over and over again, even though their characters are only supposed to interact superficially. They are the only ones, aside from Sheldon, who know what’s going on. When they decide they’re done and want to leave, however, Sheldon has different ideas.
I loved the growth that Brynn went through over the course of the story, and the sacrifices she was willing to make for the people who mattered to her. And I think everything worked out perfectly in the end, both for the show and in real life.
